Getting High with the Most High: Drugs in the Bible

“Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, spikenard, and saffron; cane and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and agarwood, with all the chief spices.” – Song of Solomon, 4:13-14

Nearly all of these plants contain psychoactive compounds, and the Holy Massage Oil recipe in Exodus reveals that the ancient Hebrews worked with complex synergies and enzyme-inhibition to trigger powerful psychedelic experiences. Another mind-bending preparation in Jewish Scripture is a Temple Incense containing opioid- and GABA-receptor agonists, dopamine boosters, and other curious chemicals. Then there is the ‘Bread of Presences’ that satisfies at tiny doses, and the enigma of manna and the collective synaesthetic vision at Mount Sinai. But what is manna?

Reverend Danny Nemu will further “enlighten” us with this talk on drugs in biblical times.

Danny’s background is in the History and Philosophy of Medicine from the University of Manchester. He encountered ayahuasca when living in Japan, and followed the trail back to the Brazilian Amazon where a sandfly bite infected him with leishmaniasis. This highly aggressive parasite quickly colonised a few inches of his flesh and had designs on much more – but it also proved to be a great teacher, providing a firsthand opportunity to study the intricacies and potencies of Daime ritual.

He is the author of Science Revealed and Neuro-Apocalypse, both out on Psychedelic Press.
