Oles Honchar: A Word as a Weapon
Benefit screening for Ukraine

The film describes the biography of the famous Ukrainian writer, politician and public figure, and one of the founders of Ukrainian Independence, Oles Honchar.

Five students of the Oles Honchar University of Dnipro are going on a journey to explore the landmarks of the writer: Dnipro, Kharkiv, Poltava, Novomoskovsk, and Kyiv. The students write essays, share ideas, and try to understand the complex life path of Gonchar. They try to follow his aspirations, hopes, and learn about his victories and failures.

Several artistic reconstructions give the opportunity to get a feeling of how his life went, and to understand the motivation of Honchar and the dilemmas he faced in the different stages of his life. The directors of the film recreated Oles Honchar’s deeply emotional personal and political experiences. To achieve this a one-man show was staged, based on his diaries and letters, which became an organic part of the film.

The film is a fascinating journey into the past. It offers a look into the development of Ukrainian culture and society, which has ultimately led to the independence of the nation of Ukraine. Created before the beginning of the active Russian intervention in Ukraine, the film largely echoes the new realities, and explains the causes of this modern warfare. But it also reveals patterns of behavior that lead to victory, the initial triumph of Ukraine as a country.

The movie’s premiere could not happen in Ukraine due the full-scale invasion of the Russian army. The creators of the movie were forced to make a new plan, and decided host a charity tour through Europe with screenings of the film. Viewings have taken place in Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Germany, and now the Netherlands. You will have a unique opportunity to meet and communicate with the authors, to help Ukraine, have an exciting evening, and get acquainted with Ukrainian cinema.

Фільм розповідає про біографію знаменитого українського письменника, політика, громадського діяча, одного з фундаторів української Незалежності Олеся Гончара.

За сюжетом п’ятеро студентів Дніпровського університету імені Олеся Гончара відправляються у мандрівки, аби на власні очі побачити знакові для літератора місця: у Дніпрі, Харкові, на Полтавщині, у Новомосковську та Києві.

Студенти пишуть есе, діляться думками, сперечаються, намагаючись зрозуміти складний життєвий шлях Гончара, його прагнення, надії, осмислити його перемоги та невдачі. Зрештою – вдихнути повітря епохи, яка була сповнена драматичних подій і, зрештою, передувала здобуттю Незалежності.

Кілька художніх реконструкції дають можливість відчути атмосферу минулих літ, зрозуміти мотивацію Гончара, його життєві дилеми на різних життєвих етапах.

Автори фільму відтворили глибокі душевні переживання Олеся Гончара. Для цього на основі його щоденників, листів було поставлено моноспектакль, який став органічною складовою стрічки.

У фільмі також – унікальні і забуті факти, аналіз від дослідників, очевидців, родичів.

В цілому фільм – захоплива мандрівка у минуле, погляд очима сучасних молодих людей на розвиток української культури і громадського руху, які зумовили здобуття Незалежності.

Створений до початку активної фази російської інтервенції в Україну, фільм багато в чому перегукується з новими реаліями, пояснює причини сучасної війни. Але і розкриває моделі поведінки, які ведуть до перемоги, до тріумфу України.

Прем’єра фільму не відбулася в Україні через повномасштабне вторгнення Російської Федерації. Автори фільму змушені були прийняти альтернативне рішення і здійснити благодійний тур Європою з кінопоказом. Словаччина, Чехія, Польща, Угорщина, Литва, Німеччина та ін. У вас є унікальна можливість зустрітися та поспілкуватися з авторами, допомогти Україні, провівши цікавий вечір познайомившись з українським кінематографом.
