PROTESTKUNST mini-fest | I.s.m. Conservatorium van Amsterdam + XR Fashion Action

Er is veel gaande in de wereld, waarin activisme en protest een grote rol spelen. Tijdens PROTESTKUNST staan activisme en protest in kunst en cultuur centraal. In samenwerking met verschillende partners, waaronder Conservatorium van Amsterdam en XR Fashion Action, belichten we de verschillende manieren waarop kunst en cultuur een rol kunnen spelen in activisme. Wat je kan verwachten? Muziek, workshops, talks, exposities en meer. Laat je inspireren en activeren!

XR Fashion Action spreekt zich uit over klimaatverandering en inspireert onder het motto “Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, Rewear, Repair, Rebel” om je weg te bewegen van de vervuilende fast fashion industry om zo bij te dragen aan een schonere toekomst en fashion industry. Door middel van protesten, events en workshop zetten ze zich in voor een schone en rechtvaardige mode industrie.

Breng vooral je eigen kleding mee om te ruilen, repareren of te doneren, open voor alle deelnemers!

House of Extinction verzorgt een workshop drag, met performances, en een cursus genderhokjes breken. House of Extinction strijd tot het bittere einde, gewapend met ecoglitterbommen en stilletohakken.

Panel Activisme in Muziek
Fré, Jan Modaal en Mx. gaan in gesprek onder leiding van Xillan Macrooy rondom thema activisme in muziek. Xillan is Surinaams-Nederlands muzikant die zijn culturele invloeden combineert., Eerder stond hij zijn EP Release voor de release van zijn EP Crowning Gods.

Jan Modaal
Jan Modaal schrijft punk smartlappen. Zijn debuut “Wil je dood ofzo?” is uitgekomen in 2020. In vier snijdende, scheurende stukken zet Jan zijn visie op de wereld uiteen. Hard, aanstekelijk en recht voor zijn raap. Jan Modaal is de man van het volk, de schelle stem van een generatie.

Benjamin Fro
Benjamin Fro is een rapper en zanger die met een unieke mix van hip-hop, soul en jazz probeert verschillende genres en mensen bij elkaar te brengen. In zijn scherpe lyrics verkent hij thema’s als identiteit, gentrificatie en spiritualiteit in een wereld waarin geld en status boven alles staan. Voor zijn verschillende singles en EP’s werkte hij o.a. samen met artiesten als Akwasi, Halder en .Multibeat

Fré
FRÉ schrijft de meeste van haar songs bij zonsopgang, als de wereld nog stil is en haar innerlijke criticus nog ligt te slapen. Op dit moment werkt ze aan een nieuwe EP met als thema vrouwelijkheid. De muziek brengt FRÉ in een intrigerend muzikaal landschap, met invloeden van artiesten als Sufjan Stevens, Kimbra en Bon Iver. Naast het podium is FRÉ medeoprichter van MDE NL, de Nederlandse tak van de internationale organisatie Music Declares Emergency. Met muzikanten, professionals uit de muziekindustrie en milieuwetenschappers verklaart ze een klimaat- en milieu-noodsituatie en roept ze op tot onmiddellijke actie om het milieu en al het leven op aarde te beschermen.

Mx.
‘Niet nog een coming-of-age-verhaal. toch? Hebben we al duizend keer gehoord.’ Als je dat denkt is Mx. hier om te vertellen dat je fout zit. Mx. besloot representatie van nonbinaire personen zelf op zich te nemen. Het resultaat is goudeerlijke queer indiefolk, waar van gaat springen en huilen tegelijk. Mx. is het project van Tisha Smit, en ook de Engelse aanhef voor wie meneer of mevrouw niet past.

Backyard Stories
Het begon in 2019 in een tuin in Melbourne volgepropt met vrienden en overleefde de pandemie als podcast. Backyard Stories werd geboren uit een liefde voor storytelling. Gedurende een event wordt er ruimte gecreëerd voor zowel gevorderde als beginnende storytellers om op een geselecteerde prompt te reageren in de vorm van een short story. Deze short stories worden voorgedragen tijdens Backyard Stories in een informele, relaxte setting. In 2022 reist Backyard Stories naar New York City, Amsterdam en Londen. Tijdens PROTESTKUNST zal Backyard Stories een event hosten met het thema HOPE.

There’s a lot happening in the world, things in which protest and activism play a big role. At our festival PROTESTKUNST we celebrate activism and protest in the arts. In collaboration with activist partners, including YOUth ACT and XR Fashion Action, Cinetol highlights several ways in which art and music can play a role in activism. Expect music, workshops, talks, exhibitions and much more. Come by to get inspired, and to get prepared for action!

XR Fashion Action

XR Fashion action is fighting against climate change, and tries to inspire people to join, under the slogan Reduce, Reuse, Refure, Rewear, Repair, Rebel. They aim to divert people from the polluting fast fashion industry, to help create a cleaner future with more sustainable clothing.

Feel free to bring your own clothes for the repair workshop and clothing swap. Both are open to all participants.

House of Extinction will provide a drag workshop, with performances and a crash course in breaking gender barriers and destroying capitalism. Armed with eco friendly glitter and ten inch heels, House of Excinction is prepared to fight till the bitter end.

Jan Modaal

Jan Modaal, the everyman, sings punky tearjerkers of the traditional Amsterdam kind. He released his first EP in 2020, in which he declared his vision of the world. Loud, straightforward and catchy, his songs are for the everyman angry the world, the raspy voice of a generation.

Benjamin Fro

Benjamin Fro is a rapper and singer, who aims to bring different genres and people together, creating a mixture of hip hop, soul and jazz. His powerful lyrics explore identity, gentrification and spirituality, in a world in which status and money count above anything else. He has collaborated with Akwasi, Halder and .Multibeat among others, and has a big solo output as well.

FRÉ

FRÉ writes most of her songs during sunset, when her inner critic is still asleep. Currently she’s working on a new EP around the theme of femininity. She creates a fascinating musical landscape, inspired by artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Kimbra and Bon Iver.She is also one of the founders of MDE NL, the Dutch branch of Music Declares Emergency. With musicians, music professionals and climate scientists she declared a climate emergency, calling for immediate action to save the earth.

Mx.

“A coming-of-age story, oh hell, not another one. We’ve already heard everything 1000x over.” Well, if you’re thinking this, Mx. is here to tell you you’re wrong. Missing queer representation, especially concerning non-binary individuals, Mx. decided it was time to take matters into their own hands. The result is a bundle of honest indiefolk songs that might make you wanna jump around and cry at the same time. Mx. is the project of Tisha Smit. It is also a title for anyone who doesn’t fit into being a Mr, Mrs, Miss or a Ms.

The Garden | Backyard Stories

It all started in 2019 in a garden filled with friends and friends of friends in Melbourne and survived the pandamic as a podcast. Backyard Stories was born out of a love for storytelling. The event creates a space for starting and established storytelllers to respond to a pre-selected prompt in the form of a short story. These short stories are then presented during Backyard Stories in an informal, relaxed setting. In 2022 Backyard Stories travels to New York City, Amsterdam and London. During PROTESTKUNST the event will be formed around the prompt HOPE.
